“Inside Out” Leads Friday Box Office, “Ted 2” Disappoints, “Max” Follows

Inside Out [Disney Pixar - Official]

A disappointing opening night performance for “Ted 2” leaves only two films in the race for #1 at this weekend’s box office.

Not expected to hold up as well as “Inside Out” and “Jurassic World” over the weekend, “Ted 2” needed to get off to a dominant start on Friday. It did not.

Expected to earn as much as $20 million on Friday, “Ted 2” instead settled for $13.2 million. That positioned it behind “Inside Out” ($15.0 million) and “Jurassic World” ($14.7 million).

Originally in the $50 million range, its complete weekend forecast has now been reduced to the low-$30 millions. Battling for #1, “Inside Out” and “Jurassic World” are each tracking in the $46-51 million range.

The first “Ted,” which launched in 2012, earned $20.6 million on its first Friday and $54.4 million in its first weekend. Benefiting from strong word-of-mouth, it held up solidly over time and ended its US run with a healthy $218.9 million.

— This Friday also brought forth the opening of “Max.” The film placed fourth with $4.4 million. “Spy” followed in fifth with $2.1 million.
