“Tomorrowland,” “Pitch Perfect 2” Lead Friday Box Office; “Poltergeist” Follows

Extremely tight, the Friday box office battle between new release “Tomorrowland” and holdover champion “Pitch Perfect 2” offered no clear indication regarding which film will win the entire Memorial Day Weekend.

Both films grossed $9.7 million at the Friday box office. As a result, both films should land just above $30 million for the three-day weekend and at around $40 million with Memorial Day included. Clarity regarding the ultimate winner may not emerge until then.

“Poltergeist” followed closely with $9.3 million on Friday. Expected to be more front-loaded than the aforementioned two films, its distance from the top spot will nonetheless increase as the weekend progresses.

In fact, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which earned a fourth-place $6.7 million on Friday, may overtake “Poltergeist” by the time the weekend concludes.

With $5.4 million in receipts, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” placed fifth on Friday. Its cumulative gross presently stands at $388.5 million. By the end of the weekend, it will have crossed the $400 million mark.
