“Fifty Shades Darker” started out with the lead on Friday, but family-friendly “The LEGO Batman Movie” pulled ahead as the weekend progressed.
Credited with an estimated $55.6 million in opening weekend receipts, “LEGO Batman” takes #1 on the US weekend box office chart.
“Fifty Shades Darker” grabs #2 with $46.8 million.
“LEGO Batman” is technically a spin-off rather than a sequel, but comparisons to the performance of 2014’s “The LEGO Movie” are natural. That film earned $69.1 million in its inaugural weekend.
“Fifty Shades of Grey,” the predecessor to “Fifty Shades Darker,” took home $85.2 million in its first weekend.
“John Wick: Chapter 2,” the weekend’s other big new release, earns #3 with $30.0 million in estimated receipts. Unlike “LEGO” and “Fifty Shades,” it outperformed its predecessor; “John Wick” earned just $14.4 million when it opened in 2014.
“Split,” last weekend’s winner, falls to #4 with $9.3 million (cume now $112.3 million). “Hidden Figures” slips one spot to #5 with $8.0 million (cume now $131.5 million).
