“Split” Retains US Weekend Box Office Crown, “A Dog’s Purpose” Debuts At #2

The critically acclaimed “Split” earns a straight weekend box office victory in the US.

The film earned an estimated $26.3 million in its second weekend. Buoyed by strong reviews, the impressive tally only trails last weekend’s debut mark by 34.3%.

To date, “Split” has earned $78.0 million in the US.

“A Dog’s Purpose,” the top new release, takes #2 on this weekend’s chart. It grossed an estimated $18.4 million.

“Hidden Figures” holds at #3 with $14.0 million (cume now $104.0 million), while the new “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” takes #4 on the strength of its $13.9 million opening weekend receipts.

“La La Land,” which added $12.1 million to its haul (cume now $106.5 million), remains #5.

In addition to “A Dog’s Purpose” and “Resident Evil,” this weekend welcomed a new wide release in the form of “Gold.” It earned $3.5 million from just under 2200 theaters and grabs #10 on the chart.
