While its total came in just shy of the industry’s $60 million forecast, the well-reviewed “Ant-Man” secured a weekend box office victory.
According to studio estimates, “Ant-Man” will claim a three-day total of $58.0 million. That gives it the edge over previous champion “Minions,” which slips to #2 on the strength of its $50.2 million.
While that $50.2 million represents a fairly sharp 56.6% week-to-week decline, it does thrust the film’s cumulative gross past the $200 million mark. After two weekends, “Minions” has earned $216.7 million.
The Judd Apatow-directed Amy Schumer vehicle “Trainwreck” earns third on the strength of an estimated $30.2 million. Undoubtedly impressive, the tally nonetheless falls short of the all-time Apatow record. Held by 2007’s “Knocked Up,” the record opening weekend for a Judd Apatow-directed project is $30.7 million.
“Inside Out” (#4, $11.7 million) and “Jurassic World” (#5, $11.4 million). The weekend tallies brought “Inside Out” past the $300 million cumulative mark (to $306.4 million) and “Jurassic World” past $600 million (to $611.2 million).
