“Pitch Perfect 2” did not simply dominate the weekend box office race. It also earned more in its first weekend of release than 2012 original “Pitch Perfect” did in its entire US run.
According to the latest studio estimates, “Pitch Perfect 2” earned $70.3 million in its first weekend of US release. Enough to crush industry “insiders”‘ pre-weekend forecast of $50 million and the $44.4 million earned by #2 film “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the tally also bests the first film’s $65.0 million cumulative total.
After two weeks at #2, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” slips to #3 this week. It follows “Pitch Perfect 2” ($70.3 million) and “Mad Max” ($44.4 million) with $38.8 million in receipts. Its overall US gross now stands at $372.0 million.
“Hot Pursuit” ($5.8 million, #4) and “Furious 7” ($3.6 million, #5) completed the top five.
