“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” claimed a convincing box office victory Friday, but by the time Sunday evening rolls around, family-skewing “Frozen” might have ascended to number one.
Down from the $15.1 million earned by “Paranormal Activity 4,” “The Marked Ones” garnered $8.7 million in receipts Friday. That topped the $6.8 million earned by “Frozen,” but insofar as family films like “Frozen” tend to rally late in the weekend while “Paranormal Activity” movies have a tendency to be front loaded, some believe “The Marked Ones” will not win the weekend.
In any event, “The Marked Ones” will claim the lowest opening weekend total for an “Activity” film since the first one (which debuted on only twelve screens), while “Frozen” will flirt with the $300 million cumulative mark.
Other top five finishers Friday include “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” ($5.1 million, #3), “The Wolf of Wall Street” ($4.3 million, #4) and “American Hustle” ($4.2 million, #5).
