It was not as strong as its predecessors, but “Cars 3” was still strong enough to win the US weekend box office.
According to studio estimates, it debuts at #1 with $53.5 million in opening weekend receipts.
Direct predecessor “Cars 2” debuted with $66.1 million in 2011. The original “Cars” started with $60.1 million in 2006.
Still, “Cars 3” comfortably claims #1 on this weekend’s chart. “Wonder Woman,” its closest competitor, takes #2 with $40.8 million (cume now $274.6 million). It topped the previous two weekend charts.
New release “All Eyez On Me” starts with $27.1 million, while “The Mummy” falls two spots to #4 with $13.9 million (cume now $56.5 million).
“47 Meters Down,” another newcomer, opens at #5 with $11.5 million.
— “Rough Night,” the fourth of this week’s wide new releases, misses the Top 5. Credited with an estimated $8.0 million in weekend receipts, it starts at #7.
— “The Book Of Henry,” which opened on 579 screens, earns #13 with $1.4 million.
