Neither Johnny Depp, a high-concept nor a big budget were able to help “Transcendence” make any sort of dent at the box office.
With only $11.2 million in weekend receipts, the film was forced to watch “Captain America: Winter Soldier” claim a third consecutive weekend victory.
Number one on the strength of $26.6 million, the film has officially crossed the $200 million cumulative mark.
But “Winter Soldier” was not the only film to outdraw “Transcendence.” “Rio 2” ($22.5 million) and newcomer “Heaven is for Real” ($21.5 million) also garnered more interest, which knocked the Depp film down to fourth place.
The weekend’s fifth position went to new release “A Haunted House 2.” It earned $9.1 million.
“Bears,” the weekend’s other major newcomer, settled for eleventh with $4.8 million.
