“Captain America: Winter Soldier” Tops “Rio 2” for Box Office Victory

In a classic case of winning the battle not the war, “Rio 2” was unable to sustain its opening night box office victory for the duration of the weekend. The new release was forced to settle for number two as holdover “Captain America: Winter Soldier” earns another week on top.

After earning enough to win the box office race on Friday, the family-oriented “Rio 2” rode Saturday matinee interest to a predictably solid Saturday. “Captain,” however, had an even stronger Saturday and held up well enough on Sunday to claim first place for the week.

It earned a total of $41.4 million for the weekend, while “Rio 2” could only grab $39.0 million.

Other new releases in the mix included “Oculus” ($12.0 million, #3) and “Draft Day” ($9.8 million, #4). “Divergent” claimed fifth place with $7.5 million.
