Early US album sales data suggests we could be headed for another split chart scenario. DJ Khaled’s “Major Key” is on track to win the pure US sales race, but Drake’s “Views” may repeat as the consumption king.
According to Hits Daily Double, “Major Key” is expected to sell 45-50,000 US albums during the July 29-August 4 tracking week. Such a tally should earn the album, which is exclusive to Apple Music this week, #1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart.
The inclusion of TEA (track sales/10) and SEA (track streams/1500) should result in a first week consumption total of 67-72,000 units. With Drake’s “Views” expected to generate upwards of 75,000 in consumption, “Major Key” may not have enough overall activity for #1 on the Billboard 200.
A win in the consumption race would earn “Views” a thirteenth week atop the BB200.
The week is of course still very young; far too young to rule out the possibility of “Major Key” closing the gap.
Other notable new releases include Jake Owen’s “American Love” (projected for ~30-35,000 US sales, ~35-40,000 units) and Fantasia’s “The Definition Of (~28-32,000 sales, 29-34,000 units).
