“Hamilton” Cast Recording Reaches #1 on US iTunes Sales Chart Amid Tony Awards Dominance

“Hamilton: An American Musical” won eleven prizes — including the honor for Best Musical — at the 2016 Tony Awards.

Amid that dominant showing at the musical theater awards ceremony, the show’s original cast recording improved to #1 on the US iTunes album sales chart.

The album, which is already certified platinum in the United States, seized the throne from Beyonce’s “Lemonade.” The Beyonce album is now #2, while Drake’s #3 “Views,” Nick Jonas’ #4 “Last Year Was Complicated,” and Simon & Garfunkel’s #5 “The Best Of Simon & Garfunkel” complete the Top 5.

The Tony Awards exposure that sent “Hamilton” to the top of the iTunes chart should also apply to the broader market. Given that surge of interest — and the absence of major competition — “Hamilton” is a contender for a top spot (if not the top spot) on this week’s Billboard Top Album Sales chart.
