“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows” is on track to win the weekend box office, but it will do so with a disappointing sum.

The latest “Ninja Turtles” film earned about $12.5 million at the US box office Friday (including late-night Thursday screenings). While easily the day’s best sum, it markedly trails the $25.6 million opening day total enjoyed by 2014’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Its weekend gross will likely fall in the $31-35 million range. That will also represent a significant film-to-film decline; the 2014 predecessor opened with $65.6 million.

As far as this Friday’s box office race goes, new release “Me Before You” ranked as the day’s #2 film. It earned a respectable $7.8 million — and also an “A” CinemaScore from moviegoers.

With $6.6 million in receipts, “X-Men: Apocalypse” takes #3 on the Friday leaderboard. It may, however, rise to #2 by the end of the weekend.

“Alice Through The Look Glass” (#4, $3.2 million) and “The Angry Birds Movie” (#5, $2.6 million) complete Friday’s Top 5.

“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” the weekend’s other new wide release, got off to a dismal start. It earned just $1.8 million Friday and may not even reach $5 million by the end of the weekend.
