Hits Daily Double has upgraded its opening week US album sales and consumption figures for Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman.” The album is now expected to sell 130-140,000 pure US copies and drive 160-170,000 in total consumption (sales + track sales/10 + track streams/1500).
Unfortunately for Grande’s album, relevant projections have also been upgraded for Blake Shelton’s new “If I’m Honest” and Drake’s recently released “Views.” Those upgrades suggest “If I’m Honest” is now on pace to win the pure sales race. “Views” has a slight edge in total consumption.
Hits expects “If I’m Honest” to drive 140-150,000 in pure album sales and 150-160,000 in total consumption. “Views” will only sell 50-60,000 albums but will drive 170-180,000 consumption units thanks to strong track sales and streams.
The projections are very tight, and they obviously come with a margin of error. “Dangerous Woman” still has a chance to win both races.
The takeaway, however, is that “Dangerous Woman” is no longer a lock to win both races — it may even be the underdog.
Going into the week, most assumed “Dangerous Woman” would easily win the pure sales battle and comfortably lead in total consumption.
