While not as strong out of the gate as its predecessors, “Kung Fu Panda 3” still easily claimed victory at the weekend box office.
The film earned an estimated $41.0 million this weekend. Down from the $47.7m first week total amassed by “Kung Fu Panda 2” and $60.2m first week total grossed by “Kung Fu Panda,” the figure bests that of the closest competitor by a factor of more than three.
“The Revenant,” that closest competitor, earned $12.4 million this weekend.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” takes #3 with $10.8 million, while new release “The Finest Hour” settles for #4. The film, which launched on 3,143 screens, earned a modest $10.3 million this weekend.
“Ride Along 2,” the weekend’s #5 film, grossed $8.3 million.
— In addition to “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “The Finest Hours,” the weekend also welcomed new release “Fifty Shades of Black.” The film, which earned a light $6.2 million from 2,075 screens, debuts at #9.
