A monster Christmas weekend performance allows “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to remain atop the US box office.
Per studio estimates, “The Force Awakens” earned $153.5 million in its second weekend of release. The tally, which obliterates those of all other competitors, brings the film’s US cume to a whopping $544.6 million.
Thanks to a weekend gross of $38.8 million, new release “Daddy’s Home” takes #2 on the chart. Fellow newcomer “Joy” follows at #3 thanks to its $17.5 million in opening weekend receipts.
“Sisters” (#4, $13.9 million) and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” (#5, $12.7 million) complete the Top 5.
New wide releases “Concussion” (#6, $11.0 million) and “Point Break” (#8, $10.2 million) land beneath the Top 5. The two bookend “The Big Short,” which expanded into a semi-wide theater count this week (1,585). It takes #7 on the strength of its $10.5 million in weekend receipts.
Launched in 100 theaters, “The Hateful Eight” grabs the #11 spot on the weekend chart. It earned $4.5 million.
