In addition to generating considerable interest from music publications and social media users, Ryan Adams’ “1989” cover album posted a solid first week sales total.
According to Hits Daily Double, Adams’ interpretation of Taylor Swift’s smash 2014 release sold approximately 51,422 pure copies during the September 18-24 tracking week. The album, which arrived on September 21, was only available for the last four days of that official tracking period.
Set to be issued Sunday, Billboard’s more authoritative data will differ from that reported by Hits Daily Double. The disparity will not, however, be significant enough to transform the overall assessment: “1989” fared well in its first week.
Based on its sales estimate, Hits says “1989” was the week’s sixth-best-selling album.
It should, meanwhile, claim a Top 10 position on the consumption-oriented Billboard 200. With Track Equivalent Albums (10 single sales = 1 album equivalent unit) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (1500 single streams = 1 album equivalent unit) included, Hits estimates that “1989” posted a first week consumption total of ~56,837.
Taylor Swift’s original “1989” (~46,318 total units) will also claim a Top 10 spot on the Billboard 200.
