While it narrowly trailed semi-wide new release “War Room” at the Friday box office, “Straight Outta Compton” pulled ahead as the weekend progressed.
As a result, it tops the weekend box office for a third straight week.
“Compton” earned an estimated $13.2 million from Friday to Sunday. That gave it the edge over the aforementioned “War Room,” which settles for #2 on the strength of its $11.0 million.
“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” earns #3 courtesy $8.3 million, while new release “No Escape” debuts at #4 with a similar $8.3 million. The debut is a soft one for “No Escape,” which launched in a healthy 3,355 theaters and represented the weekend’s highest-profile premiere.
“Sinister 2” completed the top five with $4.7 million.
The disappointment associated with the “No Escape” launch had nothing, however, on the paltry performance posted by Zac Efron vehicle “We Are Your Friends.” The EDM-centric film debuted with a disastrous $1.8 million; its pre-screen average was a mere $772.
