“Pixels” Tops Underwhelming Friday Box Office, “Paper Towns,” “Southpaw” Debut

None of the week’s three new releases got off to a particularly dazzling start Friday. “Pixels” did, however, earn enough to rank as the day’s #1 film.

The atypical Adam Sandler release earned $9.2 million in its first day of release. That positions it for an opening weekend in the low-to-mid $20 million.

Such a mark may allow holdover “Ant-Man,” which placed second on Friday, to win the overall weekend. The film, which earned $7.2 million, is on track for a weekend total in the vicinity of $25 million.

“Minions,” which earned $6.7 million, was Friday’s #3 film.

New release “Paper Towns” followed with a $6.3 million Friday take. Shy of expectations, the total positions “Paper Towns” for a weekend haul in the $15 million ballpark.

Going into the weekend, analysts were eyeing an opening in the $18-23 million range.

Fellow new release “Southpaw” earned $6.2 million on Friday. It was the day’s #5 film.
