Twenty One Pilots’ New “Blurryface” Wins Album Sales Race with 134K (Updated)

Update: An official first-week sales total of 134,000 earns twenty one pilots’ “Blurryface” the #1 spot on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart. By far the best weekly sales total for a twenty one pilots album, the mark also gives the duo its first victory in an album sales race.

With Track Equivalent Albums (10 single sales = 1 album sale) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (1500 single streams = 1 album sale), the album’s first-week consumption total elevates to 147,000 units. That earns “Blurryface” a #1 debut on the revamped Billboard 200.

The Billboard 200’s top ten is as follows:

1) twenty one pilots – Blurryface – 147K total units (134K from sales)
2) Taylor Swift – 1989 – 91K total units (40K from sales)
3) Pitch Perfect 2 – 74K total units (56K from sales)

=====================================

For the first time in its career, twenty one pilots has won a weekly album sales race.

According to Hits Daily Double, the duo’s “Blurryface” moved approximately 134,022 pure copies during the sales week ending May 24. While Billboard’s more authoritative sales data will differ slightly, it will not change the fundamental conclusion: “Blurryface” was the week’s best-selling album.

As a result, “Blurryface” will claim the top spot on the Top Album Sales chart.

The inclusion of Track Equivalent Albums (10 single sales = 1 album sale) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (1500 single streams = 1 album sale) lifts the album’s first week consumption total to ~139,022 units. That will earn “Blurryface” the #1 spot on the revamped, consumption-oriented Billboard 200 chart.

Other top albums from a pure sales standpoint include the “Pitch Perfect 2” soundtrack (~54,649), Taylor Swift’s “1989” (~40,233), Zedd’s “True Colors” (~39,834) and Jamie Foxx’s “Hollywood: A Story of a Dozen Roses” (~28,217).

Other top albums from a total consumption standpoint include Taylor Swift’s “1989” (~91,568**), the “Pitch Perfect 2” soundtrack (~66,831), Meghan Trainor’s “Title” (~49,370) and Zedd’s “True Colors” (~48,175).

**Note: Hits Daily Double’s “1989” total includes TEA from the Kendrick Lamar remix of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.” Billboard has yet to formally confirm that sales for the remix, which is not technically an album track, will count toward the album’s Billboard 200 position.
