There are twelve months in a year. Taylor Swift’s “1989” did not hit shelves until the final week of the tenth.
Despite that handicap, there is now a strong chance it will rank as 2014’s best-selling album.
According to Hits Daily Double, Swift’s fifth studio album is expected to reclaim #1 on the weekly sales chart with a total of 340-350,000.
If the album performs as expected this week, its cumulative total will exceed 3.34 million by the end of tracking on Sunday.
Such a total would fall within striking distance of the cumulative sum for the “Frozen” soundtrack, which is 2014’s current leader.
The “Frozen” total stood at roughly 3.42 million through the end of the most recent tracking period**. Currently tracking for fewer than 55,000 sales this week, the album’s lead over “1989” will doubtfully be greater than 150,000 by December 21.
Based on how the two albums have been performing, “1989” should be able to close that gap during Christmas week (the final tracking period of 2014) and officially become the year’s best-seller.
**With the entire January 5 tracking week (which actually began on December 30, 2013) included in its 2014 total, “Frozen” has sold 3.42 million copies in 2014.
