“The Equalizer” Tops Weekend Box Office, “Boxtrolls” Debuts at #3

With a total that doubles that of its nearest competitor, “The Equalizer” gives Denzel Washington yet another #1 at the weekend box office.

Improving upon 2013’s “2 Guns” by slightly lagging behind the opening total of 2012’s “Safe House,” Washington’s “The Equalizer” tops the box office with a solid $35 million.

Available on 3,236 screens, the film brought home an average of $10,816 from each cinema.

“The Maze Runner,” last week’s leader, sank to #2 with $17.5 million in receipts. It narrowly holds off newcomer “The Boxtrolls,” which opens at #3 on the strength of $17.3 million.

“This is Where I Leave You” retains a respectable 61% of its gross this week, but it still slips to #4. It adds $7.0 million to its haul.

“Dolphin Tale 2” claims fifth place with $4.8 million.
