“Lucy” Crushes Forecasts, Beats “Hercules” at Friday Box Office

It was not a runaway hit, but new release “Lucy” bested late-week forecasts to reign as a convincing number one at the box office Friday.

Projected by the alleged experts to earn between $12 and $14 million in its first day out, “Lucy” ended up grossing $17.1 million in its first Friday. It should have no issue going over the $40 million mark by the end of the weekend.

Fellow new release “Hercules,” which received reviews of a similar caliber, opened with $11.1 million Friday.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” followed with $4.7 million Friday, while “The Purge: Anarchy” and “Planes: Fire and Rescue” closed the top five with $3.4 million and $2.8 million, respectively.
