While “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” had no issue claiming victory at the Friday box office, its tally was not the monster one for which some were hoping.
The film’s $35.5 million opening day take barely edges the $35.0 million earned by the film’s predecessor, and that mark came on a Tuesday. The first “The Amazing Spider-Man” debuted on July 3, 2012.
The tally also narrowly trails the $36.9 million opening night haul for “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” which opened earlier this spring.
Of course, it is hard to look solely at the negative when the margin of victory is so significant. “The Other Woman,” the film’s nearest competitor at the box office, earned just $4.8 million.
“Heaven is For Real” ($2.4 million), “Winter Soldier” ($2.1 million) and “Rio 2” ($1.7 million) completed the top five.
