Several films debuted at the box office Friday, but only one had the strength to overcome competition from holdover champ “Captain America: Winter Soldier.”
“Rio 2,” that film, narrowly edged the superhero movie to claim first place Friday. Its $12.0 million topped the $11.9 million garnered by “Captain.” As family-oriented films tend to do big business in Saturday matinees, it will likely expand its lead to claim first this weekend.
“Oculus” and “Draft Day,” the other newcomers, followed with $4.9 million and $3.6 million, respectively. “Divergent” followed to complete the top five.
When it comes to reviews, “Rio 2,” interestingly, received the worst crtical marks of the major new releases. Its 50% RT score trails the 71% for “Oculus” and 62% for “Draft Day.”
It predictably dominated with moviegoers, however. Its rare A CinemaScore tops the B+ for “Draft Day” and C for “Oculus.”
