If there were any way to spin last week’s “Ender’s Game” performance as a positive, it would be on the strength of presumed longevity. If the film could demonstrate legs, it could turn its modest opening weekend number into an impressive cumulative total.
Few really bought that as a possibility, but those who did must join the rest of the movie community: it is not going to happen.
Down 70% from last Friday’s bow, “Ender’s Game” earned just $2.9 million. It placed fourth behind “Last Vegas” ($3.2 million), “Bad Grandpa” ($3.4 million) and “Thor: The Dark World.”
The latter, the weekend’s only major debut, dominated with an impressive $31.6 million. Benefiting from “The Avengers,” as compensation for opening in the fall rather than the summer, the film’s opening day bested the original “Thor” debut by 24%.
