“Godzilla” Mark Can’t Top “Captain America'”s at Weekend Box Office

While its opening day was stronger, its opening weekend was not. “Godzilla” did not best “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in its quest to land the biggest weekend gross of 2014.

With $93.2 million in weekend receipts, “Godzilla” topped “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” ($91.6 million) but fell short of the $95.0 million garnered by “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

That reality should not dampen the celebration. Its $93.2 million total, which ranks 32nd on the all-time list, gave it an easy victory at this weekend’s box office.

“Neighbors,” the closest competitor, settled for $26.0 million. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” followed with $16.8 million.

“Million Dollar Arm,” the weekend’s other big release, claimed fourth with $10.5 million. “The Other Woman” closed out the top five with $6.3 million.
