Based on their opening day numbers, “The Secret Life Of Pets 2” and “Dark Phoenix” are pacing for disappointing performances at the US box office.
“Pets 2” may have taken first place Friday, but it did so with a modest $16.5 million. The figure sets up an opening weekend haul in the $43-49 million range, or less than half of the $104.4 million debut for the original.
Credited with $14.0 million in Friday receipts, “Dark Phoenix” was the day’s #2 film. It may close the weekend in the $31-36 million range, which would mark a steep fall from the $65.8 million earned by predecessor “X-Men: Apocalypse.”
“Aladdin,” which added $7.0 million to its haul, took third place Friday. It should close the weekend with $22-27 million.
“Godzilla: King Of The Monsters,” Friday’s #4 film, earned $4.2 million. It is on pace for a weekend tally in the $13-15 million range.
“Rocketman” followed at #5 on Friday; it earned $3.8 million. It should finish the weekend with $12-15 million in new receipts.
