While it did not start as well as the previous two “Star Trek” films, new release “Star Trek Beyond” still easily ranked as the US box office’s top film this weekend.
“Beyond” earned an estimated $59.6 million in its first weekend of release. Down from the $70.2 million earned by 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” and $75.2 million garnered by 2009’s “Star Trek,” the tally still doubles that of the closest competitor.
“The Secret Life Of Pets,” that #2 film, added $29.3 million to its haul this weekend.
“Ghostbusters” takes third with $21.6 million, while new releases “Lights Out” ($21.6 million, #4) and “Ice Age: Collision Course” ($21.0 million, #5) complete the Top 5.
