Making good on Headline Planet’s projection, “The Secret Life Of Pets” edged new release “Ghostbusters” to rank as the #1 film at the US box office this weekend.
According to studio estimates, “Pets” added $50.6 million to its haul this weekend. Enough to bring the film’s cumulative total to $203.1 million, the tally also bests the $46.0 million earned by “Ghostbusters.”
While not an outright terrible number, the $46.0 million grab is disappointing given the film’s budget, promotional campaign and connection to the iconic “Ghostbusters” franchise. It is enough for #2 on this week’s chart.
Down one place, “The Legend Of Tarzan” takes #3 with $11.1 million. “Finding Dory” (#4, $11.0 million) and “Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates” (#5, $7.5 million) are also each down one spot.
— In terms of other new releases: “The Infiltrator” starts at #8 with $5.3 million from 1600 screens. “Cafe Society” grabs about $0.36 million from 5 theaters (early platform release); it should land in the Top 20.
