“San Andreas” Wins Weekend Box Office, Sets New Solo High Mark for The Rock

Not simply the weekend’s #1 film, “San Andreas” also ranks as the highest-grossing film for which Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had sole headline billing.

According to weekend estimates, the disaster film earned $53.2 million during the May 29-31 weekend.

When it comes to films featuring The Rock, only the three most recent “The Fast and the Furious” films and 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” earned more. All of those were franchise movies, and none featured The Rock as the singular lead.

“Pitch Perfect 2,” which holds at #2 this weekend, followed distantly with $14.8 million. Last week’s winner “Tomorrowland” grabs #3 ($13.8 million), while “Mad Max: Fury Road” ($13.6 million) earns fourth.

Already past the $400 million mark, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” padded its total with an additional $10.9 million. It ranks as the #5 film.

New release “Aloha,” which received poor reviews, earns #6 with a disappointing $10.0 million.
