“Focus” Wins Weekend Box Office with $19.1M; “Lazarus Effect” Claims #5

It delivered one of the weakest opening numbers of Will Smith’s career, but his “Focus” still managed to claim a comfortable #1 at the weekend box office.

Per official studio estimates, “Focus” earned $19.1 million in its first weekend of release. Of the actor’s 19 live action vehicles to receive wide releases, only five fared worse in their opening weekends.

“Kingsman: The Secret Service” follows at #2 for the weekend. More enduring than “50 Shades of Grey,” which spent the past two weeks ahead of “Kingsman” on the weekend box office chart, the film earned an estimated $11.8 million this weekend.

“The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” grabs #3 with $11.2 million, while the aforementioned “50 Shades” slides into #4 on the strength of its $10.9 million in receipts.

New release “The Lazarus Effect” debuts at #5 with $10.6 million.
