“Mockingjay” Wins 3rd Straight Box Office Race, “Pyramid” is Best Newcomer

An absence of high-profile newcomers meant a lack of challengers for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” which cruised to its third consecutive weekend box office victory.

Despite delivering the weakest “Hunger Games” performance on record, “Mockingjay” remained dominant compared to its current box office competition. It added $21.6 million to its haul this weekend; its cumulative gross now stands at $257.7 million.

“Penguins of Madagascar” repeated at second courtesy $11.1 million, while “Horrible Bosses 2” claimed third by adding $8.6 million to its overall take.

“Big Hero 6” and “Interstellar” earned $8.1 million and $8.0 million to finish at #4 and #5, respectively.

Released in 589 theaters, “The Pyramid” ranked as the weekend’s hottest newcomer. It finished at #9 overall with $1.4 million in receipts.

New release “Wild,” which spent its first weekend on 21 screens, earned $630,000 for fifteenth-place.
