Envisioned by analysts as a right race, the Friday box office battle between “Neighbors” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” proved to be a fairly lop-sided affair.
With $19.6 million in Friday receipts, the well reviewed Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy exceeded expectations and dominated the “Spider-Man” gross.
That gross, which registered below expectations, was just $10.1 million. The figure was down a staggering 71% from last Friday’s $35.2 million opening night sum.
Eyeing a weekend gross of at least $50 million, “Neighbors” will have no trouble maintaining its #1 position through Saturday and Sunday. It will defeat “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
“The Other Woman” ($2.8 million), “Heaven is for Real” ($1.7 million) and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ($1.5 million) completed the top five.
New release “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return” flopped at the box office. The animated film earned just $981,000 for an eighth place finish Friday. Panned by critics, the film did earn a rare “A” CinemaScore from moviegoers.
