Concerns that “American Idol” would continue its ratings decline were unwarranted, at least as far as the season premiere is concerned.
Fast national data reveals that “Idol” posted an 11.7 adults 18-49 rating with 29.8 million viewers. Demographic-wise, that is in-line with last year, though most believe the final data will reveal a slight uptick from the season eight premiere.
“Idol” easily gave FOX the night, although it did not send CBS powerhouse “NCIS” down a cliff. That show was still strong with 20.7 million viewers and a 4.3 rating at 8PM; “NCIS: LA” followed with 15.5 million viewers and a 3.0. “The Good Wife” completed CBS’ evening with a rather strong 3.0 rating and 13.8 million viewers.
Elsewhere, NBC’s rare hit “The Biggest Loser” was solid but unspectacular against the increased competition. It averaged a 3.2 rating with 8.1 million viewers. “The Jay Leno Show” landed at a 1.9 rating with 6.2 million viewers.
With The CW in re-runs, it was ABC’s job to be the night’s poor performer. At 8PM, “Scrubs” averaged a .8 rating with 2.5 million viewers; “Better off Ted” posted a .8 with 2.2 million. At 9PM, “Scrubs” jumped to a 1.2 with 2.7 million; “Ted” was good for 2.5 million viewers and a 1.0. “The Forgotten” aired at 10PM with a 1.3 rating and 4.37 million viewers.
