The reigning Grammy winner for Album of the Year has officially reached a new multi-platinum tier in the United States.

According to the RIAA, Taylor Swift’s “1989” reached 6x platinum status on October 19, 2016.

The 6x platinum certification confirms 6 million in US album units. Each unit is equal to 1 sale, 10 track sales or 1500 track streams.

Whereas many newly certified albums are generating the majority of their units from track sales and streams, it is worth noting that “1989” has sold roughly 6 million pure US copies in the United States. Its certification is therefore as much of a “pure sales award” as one should expect to see in 2016.
