“New Year’s Eve” Tops Box Office, But It’s No “Valentine’s Day”

Predictably, ensemble comedy “New Year’s Eve” will win the weekend box office.

But if one thought the box office magic of “Valentine’s Day” (from the same director) would strike again this December, he looks set to be proven wrong.

The film looks good for only about $7 million Friday. While easily ahead of the pack, that $7 million means “Eve” might not even top $20 million for the weekend. By comparison, “Valentine’s Day” opened to over $56 million, while the similar “He’s Just Not That Into You” managed $27 million (but had far more staying power than “Valentine’s Day”).

Elsewhere, Jonah Hill’s “The Sitter” is set to earn in the $3.5 million territory, and is thus on pace for a soft $9 or $10 million. “Breaking Dawn” and “The Muppets” will also be in the top five.
