“Pacific Rim Uprising” Wins US Weekend Box Office; “Black Panther” Becomes Top Superhero Film

This week’s box office chart brings good news for “Pacific Rim Uprising” and “Black Panther.”

“Pacific Rim Uprising” debuts at #1 on the US weekend box office chart. In doing so, it seizes the throne from “Black Panther,” which had spent the past five weekends on top.

This week’s box office report is not, however, without some very good (historic, in fact) news for the latter film.

Per studio estimates, “Pacific Rim Uprising” will close the weekend with $28.0 million in receipts. While the tally trails the $37.3 million figure posted by the 2013 original, it is enough for a convincing #1 debut.

“Black Panther” added $16.7 million to its haul this weekend. While the figure is only enough for #2 on this weekend’s chart, it helps “Black Panther” reach an impressive milestone.

With the $16.7 million included, “Black Panther” boasts $630.9 million in total US earnings. That figure tops the $623.4 million achieved by “Marvel’s The Avengers” and establishes “Black Panther” as the highest-grossing superhero film of all-time.

“Black Panther,” moreover, takes #5 on the overall leaderboard. Only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936.7 million), “Avatar” ($760.5 million), “Titanic” ($659.4 million) and “Jurassic World” ($652.3 million) earned more.

Before its run is over, “Black Panther” may end up moving past “Jurassic World” and “Titanic.”

As for this weekend’s box office, “I Can Only Imagine” holds at #3. The film added $13.8 million to its haul, which trails last weekend’s debut mark by a mere 19%. The “I Can Only Imagine” cumulative mark now stands at $38.3 million.

“Sherlock Gnomes” debuts at #4 with a disappointing $10.6 million, while “Tomb Raider” falls three spots to #2 with $10.4 million (cume now $41.7 million).

— Other debuts this week included “Paul, Apostle Of Christ,” “Midnight Sun,” and “Unsane.”

“Paul,” which earned $5.0 million from just under 1500 screens, takes #8 on the weekend chart.

“Midnight Sun” starts at #10 with $4.1 million, while “Unsane” grabs #11 thanks to an opening weekend haul of $3.9 million.

Save for “Pacific Rim Uprising” (and perhaps “Paul” due to the lower-profile nature of its release), the newcomers all rank as disappointing performers.
