Positioning itself for a third straight weekend US box office victory, “Suicide Squad” edged new release “War Dogs” for #1 at the Friday box office.

“Suicide Squad” earned $6.0 million in Friday receipts, while the newcomer grossed $5.5 million on opening day.

The lead should widen as the weekend progresses. “Suicide Squad” should earn about $18-22 million by the close of business Sunday, while “War Dogs” will likely land in the $13-16 million range.

“War Dogs” may, in fact, slip to #3 on the weekend chart. “Sausage Party,” which was #3 Friday with $5.0 million, is pacing for a weekend total of $14-17 million.

Big budget new release “Ben-Hur” flopped with only $4.1 million at the Friday box office. Enough for only #4 Friday, the tally positions “Ben-Hur” for a weekend gross of just $10-12 million.

Friday’s #5 film “Kubo And The Two Strings” will likely move ahead of “Ben-Hur” by the end of the weekend. It earned just under $4.1 million Friday and should reach $11-13 million by the weekend’s conclusion.
