“The Martian” Wins Weekend Box Office, Expanded “Sicario” Grabs #3

Critically acclaimed new release “The Martian” debuts comfortably atop the weekend box office.

Per studio estimates, the new film earned $55.0 million during its first three days of release. That allows it to dethrone “Hotel Transylvania 2,” which added $33.0 million to its cume this weekend.

“Sicario,” which expanded into a 2,620 theaters this weekend, takes the #3 spot. It earned $12.1 million.

“The Intern” (#4, $11.6 million) and “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” (#5, $7.7 million) complete the weekend’s Top 5.
