Beating the monster that is “Gravity” was going to be a tall order, but new release “Carrie” certainly could have put up a stronger fight.
The remake, which received lukewarm reviews, underwhelmed with just $17 million in box office receipts this weekend. Less than expected and far less than desired, the total was only good enough for third place on the initial charts: “Gravity” earned a third straight number one with $31.0 million, while “Captain Phillips” attracted $17.3 million in its second frame.
“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” claimed fourth with $10.1 million, while “Escape Plan” settled for fifth with $9.8 million. The unimpressive performance for the Sylvester Stallone/Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle was expected; neither is a box office draw in today’s climate.
“Prisoners” ($2.1 million) and “Enough Said” ($1.8 million) followed in sixth and seventh, while flop “The Fifth Estate” could only muster $1.7 million. “Runner Runner” ($1.6 million) and “Insidious Chapter 2” ($1.5 million) closed the top ten.
