Proving a strong correlation between reviews and performance, well-received “Prisoners” dominated the box office chart this weekend, while critically-panned “Battle of the Year” functioned as flop of the week.
The Jake Gyllenhaal-Hugh Jackman drama grossed a decent $21.4 million over its first three days of release, besting the $14.5 million earned by holdover champ “Insidious Chapter 2.”
“The Family” followed in third place with $7 million, while fourth-place-finisher “Instructions Not Included” added $5.7 million to its take.
Averaging just a 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes, dance film “Battle of the Year” suffered from two left feet at the box office. It earned just $5 million for fifth place.
The weekend’s only other notable release was a 3D/IMAX version of “The Wizard of Oz,” which earned a ninth-place $3.0 million at the box office.
