MTV’s VMA Audience Boos One Direction’s Award Win

The fans who voted relentlessly for One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” were apparently not the ones in attendance at MTV’s Video Music Awards.

Upon receiving the fan-decided award for Song of the Summer, boy band One Direction approached the VMAs stage to a chorus of boos from the live audience.

The group downplayed the reaction, focusing on thanking their fans and plugging upcoming movie “This is Us,” but they could not turn the boos into cheers.

Recent award show audiences have not been kind to tween- and teen-skewing acts. This spring, the Billboard Music Awards audience gave US-based heartthrob Justin Bieber a similarly heated reaction.

Interestingly, the VMA cameras–which have repeatedly captured Taylor Swift dancing during the night’s key performances—did not pan to the “I Knew You Were Trouble” singer during the One Direction speech. Swift and One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles dated last year, and gossip reports suggested their breakup was not especially happy.
