When The Rock first agreed to work with John Cena as part of a lengthy WrestleMania program, it was utterly obvious to all observers that the storyline would end with The Rock putting over the current generation’s top Superstar.
In that sense, the WrestleMania 29 main-event could not have been more predictable. After giving The Rock a victory in 2012 to extend the storyline, WWE began building towards the opposite outcome in 2013. John Cena was obviously going to win at WrestleMania.
And that makes a new rumor all-the-more confusing (and certainly untrue). A report going around claims that The Rock was going to win at WrestleMania and then drop the title to John Cena at Extreme Rules. Once that ending was “changed,” The Rock allegedly grew so angry at WWE that he walked out on the next night’s RAW.
In reality, The Rock, who was directly involved in the creative process for his angle, knew, as the plans had long suggested, that he was going to lose at WrestleMania. That “Mania Moment,” in which The Rock endorsed Cena with an embrace, had long been etched into WWE’s storyline template.
There is simply no truth to the idea that The Rock was double-crossed or misled about WWE’s plans for WrestleMania 29.
The erroneous report also intimates The Rock is embellishing the injuries that caused him to return home after WrestleMania and miss last Monday’s RAW. Specifically, the report takes issue with the fact that The Rock is able to work out despite reports of a serious injury.
That story, too, is untrue. F4WOnline.com’s Dave Meltzer mocked the inaccurate rumor, noting that The Rock has been in serious pain. He also wisely pointed to the fact that The Rock missed the MTV Movie Awards; if the injury were a phony cover story for his being “pissed off” at WWE, why would it also prevent him from participating in a mainstream, non-WWE gig?
