Despite Weak Box Office, “Green Lantern” Could Get Sequel from Warner

“Green Lantern” premiered with a soft opening weekend box office performance, and its drop of about 65% in week two was even more disappointing. Yet according to THR, Warner Bros. is still pushing for a sequel to its latest comic adaptation.

Having grossed less than $90 million after two weekends in play, “Green Lantern” simply failed to launch, and the “settling in” claim from WB’s Dan Fellman seems particularly confusing given the strong drop-off in week two.

The launch of similarly-skewing “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” will not help matters as “Lantern” tries to hook moviegoers in the coming weekends.

Yet the studio is looking for a successful franchise, and with the popular Ryan Reynolds in the feature role, the feeling is that “Green Lantern” could still represent a valuable asset.

Specifics other than the fact that WB is “already planning a sequel” were not available at press time.
