Early Ratings Look Good For “The Event,” “Hawaii 5-0,” Bad for “Lonestar”

Three of the more anticipated new network dramas premiered Monday, and based on early overnight ratings data, only two of them look to be in good shape.

NBC’s “The Event” premiered to a 7.5/11 overnight metered market household rating and actually grew in viewership over the hour. Although an adults 18-49 demo rating will not be available until around noon on Tuesday, given the show’s likelihood of a rapport with young adults and the sheer magnitude of that viewership, it seems a foregone conclusion that “The Event”‘s premiere number will be deemed a success.

Of course, as a serialized drama that requires an audience commitment, it will be several weeks before a true assessment can be rendered. All that is clear is that NBC’s wave of publicity seemed to work in building up a premiere.

CBS’ “Hawaii 5-0,” viewed as the closest to a sure thing of any new show this year, kicked off with a bang. With a 9.8/15 in the overnights, “5-0” rated higher than everything but ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” (a 15.1/22 due to the buzzworthy cast).

As for bad news, FOX’s “Lonestar,” which Headline Planet called the best new drama but admitted would possibly struggle to find an audience on a major broadcast network, looks to have bombed. The overnight figure came in at a 2.8/5, down sizably from its “House” lead-in (7.4/11, a decline of more than 10% from last year). If curiosity buzz and rave reviews only kicked “Lonestar” up to that level, the show is in serious danger going forward.

— On the comedy front, CBS’ new “Mike & Molly” premiered to a 7.9/12 out of “Two and a Half Men”‘s 9.5/14 lead-in. That performance is perfectly solid, although filling in for previous timeslot occupant “The Big Bang Theory” actually requires building on “Two and a Half Men”‘s adults 18-49 number. Whether or not it came close to achieving that feat will not be clear until the fast nationals are released.

  1. LOVED IT! I watched Hawaii 5-0 when I was little and loved it then too. I absolutely think this one is unlike the CSI’s or the other cop shows. The scenery is gorgeous of course, and the cast kicks butt – all four of them are incredible!! PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Action-packed and humor to boot! Hawaii 5-0 is everything I thought it would be and more! Loved the show when I was younger and I think the remake version is definitely going to deliver. The cast is fantastic and the banter between Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan is definitely worth the watch! I am glad they kept the theme song the same. Finally looking forward again to Monday nights at 10pm! Please keep the 5-0 episodes coming!!! Is it Monday yet???

  3. Loved it! Big production; great directing, and acting. The show will make big stars of the main characters! It will enjoy a long series…well done!

  4. I’m already hooked! I grew up watching this show, and felt they did a great job of blending a little of the old stuff w/lots of fun-to-watch new material – totally updated. And the casting is perfect! I’m lovin’ it and can’t wait for next week! Hope it stays on for years!

  5. Seriously jrBoy Jack Lord wouldn’t be rolling over in his grave he would be loving it. If you remember he never wanted the show to end. He would be excited that our generation has decided to remake a show that he loved and do a dame good job of it. You say no substance from start to finish it had it all. The killing of a brother and father that sets revenge throughout the show. A city cop that moves to Hawaii to be with his daughter because his wife left him, but he hates the beach. A cop that was fired because they believed he took bribes, a hot ex world surfing babe who is just out of the rookie academy (who happens to be the niece of the former cop that was fired) that joins the group and a governor who allows him to do what he wants with no red tape. I think we are in for a treat with this one. The ratings also speak for themselves. I loved the old Hawaii 5-0 and the new one just as much. NBC have a great hit on their hands with this one.

  6. Hawaii 5-0: they kept the characters’ names, the title, the theme music, and the phrase “Book ’em, Danno.”

Otherwise it’s a completely new show, with no similarity, in tone or execution, to the original.

A cynic might suspect CBS had this new show, and thought it would stand a better chance if they called it Hawaii 5-0. Because, really, it could just as easily be called Assembly Line Cop Show #468.

At least they don’t have to be so damned lazy with the writing: one cliched line of dialogue after another. Is there anything in the show we haven’t seen before, except Grace Park in a bikini?

  7. Are you people serious ? I think I watched
every episode of the original series and
this new version does not compare. Why even
try to make comparisons to a show that ended
in 1982 ? Sure, more glitz and glamor but
hardly more action and not better acting. Most
of the tv cops shows today love that laid back, shirt out, unshaven look but that was
not what worked back in the 70’s. Please
give up on the comparisons. Let this new show ride on its own.

  8. hi i watch hawaii five 50 when i was a kid to and i found this one real goodi think jack lord would get happy to see that they brought this show back i say keep it on tv i am with every one else keep this on a great great show and the cast and alex oloughlin work great love love the show
    charlene

  9. CSI + Lost = Book ’em Danno. Glad they dropped the suits in this remake. Great new series! Awesome Hawaii.

  10. This 5-0 is just another hyper cop show. The 2 leads seem more like a couple of kids out of high school than the pros in the original.Already dumped this one. It’s ratings are falling fast.Try “The Defenders” if you want a new show with 2 great, more mature actors.

  11. Constant blaring background music is annoying. Same old, same old–just like any other cop show on t.v. except for the setting. Yawner.

  12. Constant background music is annoying. Same old, same old cop show. Only unique because of because of being set in Hawaii. Friends are tuning out, including me. Yawn.
