Suffice it to say, Miley Cyrus’ latest studio album does not need to be tamed in its sales battle with Eminem’s “Recovery.”
Based on preliminary sales data on Hits Daily Double, “Can’t be Tamed” is tracking for only 115-125,000 units moved, a considerable decline from previous LP “Breakout,” which eclipsed 370,000 first-week sales in 2008. Since “Breakout,” Cyrus has had mega-hit singles with “The Climb” and “Party in the USA” and thus entered the market with more musical clout than for any of her previous releases, amplifying the disappointment of “Can’t be Tamed”‘s weak opening.
While “Can’t be Tamed” supporters might point to the fact that the album is outpacing opening sales for 2009 “Time of our Lives,” the latter was a Wal-Mart/iTunes exclusive EP that was only available for a few days prior to its first chart appearance, featured a unique marketing strategy and experienced a lengthy trajectory unlikely to be rivaled by Miley’s latest album. Week two of “Time of our Lives,” for instance, produced 154,000 sales–a significant increase from week one and a number that “Can’t be Tamed” will not rival next week.
Worse for Miley is the fact that despite her progress in developing a real-world musical presence and efforts to distance herself from “Hannah Montana” and the Disney empire, the opening week sales for “Can’t be Tamed” will barely top the 108,000 for “Here We Go Again,” a very by-the-books album released by fellow “Disney Diva” Demi Lovato last year.
Other albums experiencing the competitive wrath of Eminem’s “Recovery” (estimated to sell 590-615,000 copies this week) include Ozzy Osbourne’s “Scream” (Hits Daily Double Forecast: 65-70,000), The Roots’ “How I Got Over” (HDD Forecast: 35-40,000), Keith Sweat’s “Ridin’ Solo” (20-25,000) and Jaron & The Long Road to Love’s “Getting Dressed in the Dark” (18-21,000).
No one was expecting her album to do well, including herself. So why the big headline? Don’t you stay in touch with the industry and it’s stars? She knew she would loose buyers, not neccessarly becauses fans aren’t wanting to buy it, but because parents won’t buy it for thier kids. So that leaves the older teens and adults. Not bad for an album that will not be obtainable by at least half her fan base.

In fact we already saw something of that effect with her movie, The Last Song, which was a little mature for her younger fans and only made $62 million instead of going higher with her younger fans attending. Still, I worry about Tamed because it won’t have any movie or tour support. Regardless, I am a Miley fan for life!
The problem is that A HUGE portion of her fans are the ages of 5-12, and they are not going to buy this “mature Miley” stuff.
The problem is also her 15 minutes are almost up. She cant sing nor act and needs her teeth fixed and is not especially pretty. My daughter and her friends are 11 to 12 years old & in middle school this coming school year, and miley cyrus was so yesterday to them. Any one of them would be embarrassed to like her, now several years ago when they were 7/8 years old, and still in grammar school, they could not get enough of her.

Miley has been stubborn and immature about her crossings to an adult. She deserves what she got. A mature Celeb wanting to grow up would do things like have a charitable album, launch a Broadway career, etc. I am 12, I liked Miley once, but is very hard to now. That is my opinion, LIVE WITH IT! that being said, lady mom’s point of view is certainly viable: miley doesnt have particular strong skills, she’s been a puppet for kids for a handful of years now and not much more. and she looks to be tired of being yanked around by strings. now that she has the success, she can [and did] cut those strings. her own cd, her own way and her own image. she deserves it, but she’s never going to sell the way she did.
OOHH! I like Miley oh so much! I just pray that she will continue to reap huge success once she turns 18. We have all heard of the tragedies that have come of celebrities such as Britney Spears! Keep your chin up Miley, you’re our girl – stay positive!
@Kabol, It’s a Miley world and you are just going to have to learn to live in it. Keep underestimating Miley all you want. She believes in continual improvement and has been steadily improving at everything she does every single year. Just as critics suggested Laurence Olivier should quit acting and that he only got theater roles for his pretty face, now they are all over Miley. And just as Olivier constantly upgraded his performances and abilities to the point he became considered a British national treasure, so will Miley. This is simply a trasitional album to finish off her contract with Hollywood Records. With her new label, her next CD will be Alternative Rock with some ballads. She will continue to be on top of both the music and movie fields.
You have overly bought into the “Disney Machine” theory of why Miley is successful, and you will soon see that theory is not viable as Miley continues to rock without Disney, and Disney’s other stars with access to the same machine, fail to break out.
Miley’s new cd is her best yet. She really has grown as an artest.Her songs are soo beautiful! Some of my faves are my heart beats for love, liberty walk, stay, my heart beats for love and permaneant december. Trust me she will be huge. There are a huge variety of songs on this album. She will be just fine. Her single can’t be tamed is doing pretty well
The reason her album is not selling well is because people aren’t as interested anymore. The majority of her fan base (the ones who made her) are little kids, whom she so distastefully claimed she didn’t care about impressing anymore. People don’t like rude, classless, know-it-all teens like her. Everybody can stop defending her and realize the truth; Miley is fading and she deserves it. I she wants to be immature and slutty, then she can go right ahead, but somebody new and classier will come along and nobody will be interested in Miss Miley any longer. She has lost her charm and personality and to be frank I just don’t bother listening to what she has to say anymore. Not only has she disrespected her younger fans but she has let a lot of people down by becoming like every other artist.
Two words: not impressed. And neither is my thirteen year old daughter.

Miley has filmed Hannah Montana season 4 for her younger fans like your daughter. She didn’t have to since she makes relatively little money doing it. Her performances are being geared to fans her age or older. She has fans that are her own age, you know. Apparantly, as many as Christina Aguilerra, who sold about the same number of CD’s recently. Please explain to your young daughter that Miley is not Hannah Montana. Statistics say your daughter will have sex before marriage and within four years, whether you teach her to hate on Miley or not. So why not try some peace and love.

Surprisingly people only become haters when others disagree with them. When I am sure they “hate” all day long about different things-hypocrites. I think Cyrus is an immature peon. She doesn’t even want to grow as an artist. Is it that important to break away from that character? or audience? Why the rush? I know what it is, because she want to be able to gyrate on old men in night clubs without people saying, “OMG she is too young to be doing that.” or “Where are the parents of this 17 year old girl?” or “Why is she dressed like a prostitute?” Hmm can any of this be why? Fan will love her no matter what she does, but for some of us we’ve been over her.

I read a lot of stuff about Miley, and what people say about her, and i usually never reply but today I decided to put in my 2cent.
Miley is 18 now. She can sing, and unless one of you is some popstar, you really have no right to judge her, cause well – i hate to point out the obvious, but she’s you know. famous, and you, are not.
Now to the parent of 12 year olds, to teach your daughter to value the “so todays” and ditch the “so yesterdays” is so pathetic. They should not bow into peer pressure into what they can or cannot like, I’m sure half of them just follow around the “cool kid” which is stupid. It’s things like this that make soldiers that die for our country undeserving.
Miley is absolutely wonderful, she has her head on straight, actually watch her in some interviews, i suggest Ellen degeneres or whatever floats your boat, but people are people, and they will always judge and be hypocrites, I’m just saying, actually KNOW her before you judge her on how she dresses etc.

If you have no real reason to hate, then maybe you shouldn’t? She doesn’t go around judging you, so if you don’t like her, then ignore her. Stop buying her CDs, stop listening to her songs. No one really needs to hear your opinion about how she dresses, or how she sucks at selling records because FACT is most teens – adults actually do dress with short shorts and a tank top, when your little 12 year olds grow up, they will bow to social pressure and dress like that.
FACT is she will sell more records that you probably ever will? Why? because she is famous. For what? for acting, singing, and being Miley.
So learn to love, life is better that way.
Haa, the selss r good, the album is in the top 10 in every countries where it is released, and i really think people aren’t yet used to the NEW MILEY but when she’ll come back with a 5th album, they’ll accept it more. But we most admit she can sing and act very well

she said in an interview she is taking a break from music [GOOD!] to focus on acting!? no obviously because of this story. and secondly on top of the music industry? ha she has never ever had a number one single in any country the are released in and no top 10’s in the uk EVER! on top i think not. on top would be all number 1 singles and albums and her album rankings are not much better.
now for movies well they may do well in the box office but she has had no movie’s in the top ten selling movies of all time and if you said her name to a 30+ year old (without children) they would say who is she?
