With the buzz for Monday’s threesome episode unlikely to completely turn ratings around for the struggling “Gossip Girl,” the show will get a break later this winter as new series “Life Unexpected” debuts in its timeslot.
“Gossip Girl” fans need not fear, however, as The CW’s well-liked (albeit low-rated) drama is not being considered for cancellation. The show will simply take a multiple-week break this winter before coming back with the final twelve season three episodes in the spring, says THR.
The move is designed to keep originals airing for the duration of the season in the timeslot; “Gossip Girl” has notoriously seen its ratings trail off as its seasons progress, and a going theory is that the inclusion of re-runs is what kills the show’s momentum.
By adding “Life Unexpected” to the mix starting January 18, The CW allows “Gossip Girl” to stay fresh when it returns to complete its third season (and also gives the network the chance to launch a new show in one of its tentpole timeslots).
