While it was not strong by “Transformers” franchise standards, “Transformers: The Last Knight” was strong enough to win the US weekend box office.
The film will earn an estimated $45.3 million between Friday and Sunday, which is enough for a convincing #1 on the weekend box office chart.
The tally nonetheless ranks as a low for the “Transformers” franchise. The low previously belonged to the 2007 original, which earned $70.5 million in its first Friday-Sunday weekend.
Like all but one of its predecessors, “The Last Knight” actually opened at mid-week. With its non-weekend grosses included, “The Last Knight” thus far boasts a cumulative total of $69.1 million.
Weekend estimates currently show a tie for second place: “Cars 3” and “Wonder Woman” are both expected to earn $25.2 million. The official hierarchy will not be revealed until Monday.
What can already be revealed, however, is the fact that “Wonder Woman” has moved comfortably past the $300 million domestic mark. The $25.2 million weekend tally yields a cumulative total of $318.4 million.
“Cars 3” is at $99.9 million.
“47 Meters Down” rises one spot to #4 with $7.4 million (cume now $24.3 million), while “All Eyez On Me” drops two places to #5 with $5.9 million (cume now $38.6 million). The latter fell a staggering 77.9% in its second weekend.
