By maintaining its momentum through the weekend, Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” made good on Billboard’s forecast to reach the apex of the Hot 100 singles chart.
Billboard confirmed the news Wednesday, announcing that the suddenly-controversial pop star has claimed her first number one on the key singles chart. She previously peaked at number two with both “Party in the USA” and “We Can’t Stop.”
Cyrus’ ascent knocks Katy Perry’s “Roar” off the throne, thus ending the hitmaker’s latest streak at two weeks. Despite losing the number one position, “Roar” remains a force in the sales, airplay and stream categories, and there is nothing to suggest Perry’s single will rapidly fall much farther down the ladder. A return to the top spot is, in fact, quite possible.
Lorde’s “Royals” holds at number three for the week, finally besting Robin Thicke’s monster “Blurred Lines.” That song falls to number four, besting Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” by one positoin.
The remainder of the top ten includes, in order, Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail,” Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” Eminem’s “Berzerk,” Drake’s “Hold on, We’re Going Home” and Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais’ “Summertime Sadness.”
